Stress & Anxiety
It lives in the body.
You're keeping everything together on the outside. But inside, something never quite switches off.
Understanding the Problem
Stress doesn't just
live in the mind.
Robert Sapolsky, a Stanford neurobiologist, wrote a book called Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers. The insight is elegant: animals (like zebras) experience intense, short-term stress when a lion appears - and their nervous systems return to baseline the moment the threat passes. They don't get chronic diseases (like ulcers).
We do. Because unlike the zebra, we activate the same powerful fight-or-flight response in response to work pressure, financial worry, and relationship tension - and we rarely turn it off. We ruminate on the past. We anticipate the future. The stress response runs continuously on low.
The consequences are physiological, not just psychological. Chronic stress accumulates in the body - as tension in the neck and shoulders, disrupted sleep, lowered immunity, infertility, digestive upset and a persistent sense that the body never quite resets.
How Stress Affects the Body
What chronic stress
actually does.
The nervous system doesn't distinguish between a real threat and a perceived one. It responds the same way - and if the perceived threat is constant, so is the response. Here is how that plays out in the body.
✺ Tension in Neck & Shoulders
The body's most common physical expression of held stress - flexor muscles bracing, forward head posture, headaches and stiffness following close behind.
✺ Disrupted Sleep
A nervous system locked in activation cannot produce the parasympathetic state that sleep requires. Stress and poor sleep reinforce each other in a cycle that compounds over time.
✺ Lowered Immunity
Chronic stress hormones suppress immune function - increasing susceptibility to illness and slowing recovery from injury.
✺ Digestive Disruption
The gut and the nervous system are in constant communication. Chronic stress directly alters gut motility, microbiome health, and digestive hormones.
✺ Cognitive Fog & FatigueA nervous system running on threat turns down the prefrontal cortex responsible for concentration, creativity, and emotional regulation.
✺ Increased Pain Sensitivity
Chronic stress alters the brain's pain processing, increasing inflammation, and making pre-existing physical complaints feel more intense and harder to resolve.
The Chiropractic Lens
How we help
regulate the system.
The spine is the primary conduit through which the brain communicates with the body. When spinal function is compromised, it generates brain output that contributes to a background state of low-level threat in the nervous system.
Chiropractic adjustments improve joint function, changing the way the brain directs attention, giving the body a better foundation from which to manage the stresses of modern life.
This is why clients who come in for neck pain or headaches so often report improvements in their stress resilience, sleep quality, and general sense of calm. The nervous system and the spine are the same system - approached from different angles.
A Whole-Person Perspective
Chiropractic care is
one piece of a larger picture.
We don't claim that chiropractic care is the solution to all anxiety or psychological stress. What it does well is address the physical dimension of stress: the structural tension and the nervous system dysregulation that make the body a less resilient vehicle for the inevitable demands of life. An ever-increasing base of research continues being published proving the benefits of chiropractic care with cognition, stress, mood, and general quality of life.
Combined with good sleep, movement, nutrition, genuine rest, and appropriate psychological support where needed, chiropractic care is one of the more underutilised tools available for people who feel chronically depleted, wired but tired.
We work with individuals and families in Ocean Grove and across the Bellarine who are not just looking for pain relief - but for genuine, sustained improvement in how they feel and function.

Other conditions
we commonly help with.
Neck Pain
Screen time, sitting, and modern life in general - all place significant stress on the cervical spine. We improve neck function - not just manage symptoms.
Poor Sleep
Spinal problems and nervous system imbalances are common contributors to sleep difficulties.
A more balanced nervous system = better sleep quality.
Headaches
Tension headaches are one of the most direct physical expressions of chronic stress in the body.
